Star Trek Convention, Las Vegas 2008 - Day One
6 August 2008, 8:36 PM

We've been in Las Vegas for little over 24 hours now, but it feels like we've been here a week, we've done so much.

We packed up Monday night, and made all our last minute checklists, but still ended up forgetting to get some cash and had to use an airport ATM and suffer the fees. Jeff's folks planned to look in on Mysty while we were away, and a surprising number of people expressed jealousy that we we going to a Star Trek convention.

I must first mention that I'm not very impressed with Southwest Airlines. especially after such a lovely flight to/from San Francisco for the BlogHer conference on JetBlue. Southwest's cattle-call boarding procedure left Jeff and I without seats next to each other. Luckily I got a comfortable aisle seat next to some quiet enough people, but Jeff ended up in a middle seat nearly 16 rows ahead of me. Still, the flight was only 2.5 hours and we arrived nearly 25 minutes early, so I can't complain TOO much.

The Las Vegas airport was fascinating. Not only were there slot machines everywhere (I'd expected that) but there were posters, banners and screens in every nook and cranny, all advertising shows and venues. You immediately got the feeling of being in a town built around entertainment; it had the feel of what I'd expect of Hollywood.

After a bit of a wait we got our bags, then got an shuttle bus to the Las Vegas Hilton. (Up to this point we hadn't really seen anyone that we thought might also be going to the Star Trek convention, although I did spot some folks in the hotel lobby line with the appropriate Star Trek T-shirts.) We got our keys and headed up to the room, only to find that the cleaning service was still shampooing the carpet. Back we went, to the front desk to inquire about another room.

The new room was a bit nicer, with a lovely view and newer carpet, but the rest of the hotel left a lot to be desired. Our toilet didn't work at first, though someone came up to fix it right away. Our floor's hallway was covered in crumbs (and some broken glass!) and needed cleaning, and I'd noticed quite a bit of repair work that needed to be done. Dad (35+ years in the hotel/restaurant industry, now retired) would have had a lot to say about the state of the hotel. To their credit, the hotel staff was wonderful and there was evidence that they were in the middle of a renovation. The easy access to the convention and the Star Trek Experience area was worth it.

Other than early registration for our particular ticket package, there wasn't much convention stuff happening the day we arrived so, after we settled in, we decided to take the monorail to the Las Vegas strip for lunch.

The monorail was a bit unexpected fun. Clean, quick and pleasant, it traveled from the Sahara hotel all the way to the MGM Grand and back again at all hours, makes stops at our hotel every six minutes. A pre-recorded commentary played between stops, with funny comments about each of the hotels and the Las Vegas area. ("You are now leaving the Las Vegas Hilton, home of the Star Trek Experience. Please be sure that a Ferengi did not follow you on board.")

We headed to the Paris hotel. We were going to go to a French buffet, but decided on the creperie across the hallway instead because of the long line for the buffet. It was a good choice and would later prove to be the cheapest meal we would have in Las Vegas. We wimped out of walking around and sightseeing since we were tired from all the traveling and instead opted to return to the hotel for a nap. ("You are now arriving at the Las Vegas Hilton, home of The Star Trek Experience. If you are seated next to a Klingon, you now know why.")

After our nap (we're such party animals!) we headed down to the convention area for registration. We got our programs, lanyards for our tickets, souvenir coins and a wrist band we'd have to wear all weekend. (I joked that they'd lured us in, tagged us, banded us and then set us free so they could study our migration patterns as we foraged for loot and autographs.) We could have gotten a poster too, but really had no place for it or a way to easily take it home, so we passed on that. I also wasn't that interested in the free T-shirt, so we passed on that as well.

We had "Captain's Chair" tickets, one step below the sold out "Gold Package" (which included some complimentary autographs and a Thursday night party) - a package that included reserved seating in the main theater, admission to the Friday night Star Trek Experience party and the Saturday night Symphony and dessert party. Other events, mostly breakfasts or lunches with various former Star Trek cast members had to be purchased separately. A silly mistake on my part meant that I didn't actually get tickets in the mail for the one lunch (Friday's "Boys of Enterprise") that I wanted to go to, but the folks at the registration desk took care of that quickly and easily.

Jeff and I then cruised around the vendors area, which was partially setup. There wasn't really anything we were interested in purchasing, though I was actively looking for a back pack, baseball caps, and a model kit for the NX-01 version of the Enterprise. I found the baseball caps, but they were outrageously expensive and I passed on them. I couldn't find anything like a Star Trek branded backpack anywhere, and found only one instance of the model kit for $125! Nevermind. The only thing I succumbed to was a pack of baseball cards; they were pretty and only a couple of bucks. Since I obviously wasn't going to buy any loot, I made a last minute decision to get myself tickets for autographs and a photo op with Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating - my favorite actors from Star Trek: Enterprise.

We headed back to our room, unpacked, puttered around for a bit, then went downstairs to check out the Star Trek gift shop, Star Trek-themed casino and Quark's Bar and Restaurant before it got too busy the next day with the official start of the convention. The gift shop was great and I found not only the baseball caps I was looking for at a reasonable price, but a cute shirt I couldn't pass up, and a Starfleet Academy sweatshirt for Jeff. The teddy bears in Star Trek uniforms were too cute, but I didn't get one. Yet.

The casino just outside of The Star Trek Experience had changed since the last time I'd been there with a friend of mine in 1999. At that time, when Valerie and I stopped by the Hilton to ride The Experience, all the slot machines in the Star Trek casino had science fiction, or space-related themes to them. Though the room retained the Star Trek theme, the machines had been replaced with the ordinary and ubiquitous Vegas slot machines, including Wheel of Fortune. Oh well. I discovered that The Star Trek Experience, including the restaurant, gift shop and casino, was to close September 1st as well. The whole kit and caboodle is going away. I'm glad we came when we did.

Tuesday's Photos:

The convention didn't really get rolling until Wednesday afternoon, so we slept late, then got lunch at the hotel's overpriced buffet. The convention opening and early Wednesday guests/events didn't draw much of a crowd. In fact, the main theater was only about 10% full. It did start to fill up over the course of the day though, and by the time the final guest of the day, John de Lancie ("Q" on Star Trek the Next Generation, Star Trek Deep Space Nine and Star Trek Voyager), took the stage, it was a packed house. He didn't disappoint either.

All the guests on stage today said just a short bit, then took questions from the audience. Robin Curtis (""Lt. Saavik" in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and "Tallera/T'Paal" on Star Trek: The Next Generation) was probably the biggest surprise for me - I didn't realize she was such a brash, brassy and out-there personality. Whoa. The rest were pretty much as I expected them to be as far as personality went, and all were gracious, funny, and entertaining. I have to admit, it was nice to see actors and actresses, professionals in the entertainment industry, get up on stage and be just a touch nervous if they've not done this before or in a while. Every once in a while I still get a touch nervous before teaching a class, especially if I haven't done it in a while.

I hadn't seen any rules about photography or video in my ticket package or on the web site, and camera and camcorders were in evidence everywhere Wednesday so I for some good video of every guest that day. I soon realized that I'd use up my one tape pretty quickly, and before the weekend was over, so we ventured out to a CVS pharmacy to get some more mini-DV tapes. (It wasn't until the next day, Thursday, that I saw the signs everywhere - no audio/video recording! Er, _oops_. The convention staff carefully patrolled to ensure the policy. The camcorder got put away and we never did use the extra tapes.)

We spotted a few costumed folks, though not nearly as many as we might have expected. A few were employees of The Star Trek Experience ride (a Klingon, keeping the crowd entertained). That same Klingon had been "interviewed" on TV the night before, along with a Borg from the ride, by the "host" of the hotel's own day-time talk-show-like show ("Lunchtime with Ira"). They spoke about "going back" to their respective home plants when the "temporal rift" above the ride closed. Too funny!

We also checked out the vendor's room again, though I didn't buy anything. Today there were some actors and actresses in the room, signing autographs, hawking books and taking pictures with fans. Recognizable to me was Susie Plackson ("K'Ehleyr" and "Lt. Selar" on Star Trek the Next Generation, female "Q" on Star Trek Voyager, and "Tarah" on Enterprise) and Richard Hatch ("Apollo" on the original Battlestar Galactica and "Tom Zarek" on the current incarnation of that show). I even spotted an actor who played a Klingon in the original series and the guy who played the scarred Christopher Pike (Sean Kennedy). At one table was the guy who is in the new Star Trek movie trailer - as the welder (Anthony Vitale). It was especially funny because, while looking for anyone else Twittering about the Las Vegas convention, I'd spotted his Twitter about being at the convention to be "the welder" and his comment, "What a job!"

We ventured onto the strip again for dinner, opting for a Pho place at Treasure Island. This time we lingered a bit loner, browsing the shops at the Venetian and the Pallazzo.

Two other things of note: Jeff started "micro-blogging" the whole trip through Twitter and I followed suit, including a few pictures. I've included those below.

I also got a few nice comments/compliments and questions about the mehndi on my hands and arms. I'd had those done by Kim Eitze (Henna Kim, Golden Apple Studios, 6th Street in Austin) the Saturday prior to the trip. Originally I'd intended to have a mehndi party at home back in May, around our anniversary (this year was our 5th). But I got sick and most of our May and June plans went out the window. I figured I'd still do it, but wait until the trip so more people would see them than Jeff and the cat. Maybe I'll do the mehndi party next year.

John de Lancie was great. Far too short. Hilarious guy I could have listened to him for hours. 09:02 PM August 06, 2008 from twitterrific

Packed house for John de Lancie. With a great music video, "You've got a friend in me" to start with, featuring Q and Jean Luc. 07:59 PM August 06, 2008 from twitterrific

Wow. John Fleck can belt out an awesome soprano. This from a guy who played a character with a deep gravelly voice on Enterprise. 06:03 PM August 06, 2008 from twitterrific

Look! Andorians in the distance! http://twitpic.com/6rxv 04:38 PM August 06, 2008 from twitterrific

@txgreenroot BG = Battlestar Galactica. Richard Hatch, who played Apollo in the original, for those who are curious. 04:33 PM August 06, 2008 from twitterrific in reply to txgreenroot

@txgreenroot Sort of, but it helps that these people are fairly random in the room. A big BG actor was between tshirt and model kit booths. 04:30 PM August 06, 2008 from twitterrific in reply to txgreenroot

Other than lots of starfleet uniforms, we haven't seen many aliens. One Klingon working for the Experience, and one fan as a Vulcan. 04:18 PM August 06, 2008 from twitterrific

Lots of actors and actresses of minor ST parts, as well as other shows signing here. Just saw the lead actress from Dead Like Me. 03:35 PM August 06, 2008 from twitterrific Autographs in the main room, so we're back in the vendor room. http://twitpic.com/6rn0 03:19 PM August 06, 2008 from twitterrific

Opening remarks by... Some guy. I think he's with Creation. http://twitpic.com/6rkv 03:05 PM August 06, 2008 from twitterrific

Opening show just started. Dissapointingly empty in here. Maybe 10%? 02:57 PM August 06, 2008 from twitterrific

I'm noticing that anyone who buys or makes a ST uniform by default makes themselves a captain. Apparently it's not lonely at the top. 02:55 PM August 06, 2008 from twitterrific

Sorry folks, twitterific seems determined to rotate my photos incorrectly. I apologize for the cricked necks. 02:32 PM August 06, 2008 from web

The line is a little better for the rides now. Still a lot longer than yesterday. http://twitpic.com/6req 02:21 PM August 06, 2008 from twitterrific

These big sports betting rooms amaze me. Seems very complicated. http://twitpic.com/6rd9 02:14 PM August 06, 2008 from twitterrific

Everybody else got here today apparently. The line outside Quark's bar is down the hall. It's ok, there's a Klingon keeping order. 01:38 PM August 06, 2008 from twitterrific

@SeanMcTex Allright then. Let's see how a photo out our window works. http://twitpic.com/6r10 12:48 PM August 06, 2008 from twitterrific in reply to SeanMcTex

Faz has set up her phone to receive tweets from her twitter-happy husband. We're testing it now. 01:14 AM August 06, 2008 from twitterrific

Fazia just pointed out something that needs clarification: We are not getting costumes. I was referring to other fans we were seeing. 01:11 AM August 06, 2008 from twitterrific

I thought this was the city that never sleeps. Why are all these resturaunts closing at 11:00?!? 01:07 AM August 06, 2008 from twitterrific

We just discovered a morning show style interview on the tv with a Borg and a Klingon as the guests. 11:47 PM August 05, 2008 from twitterrific

We're back in our room now to put our feet up. Faz signed up for autographs and photos with her favorite two actors from Enterprise. 11:10 PM August 05, 2008 from twitterrific

Now we're getting some costumes. I was beginning to get worried their weren't any super-nerds here. 09:45 PM August 05, 2008 from twitterrific

We got registered for the convention, and now we're wandering through the vendors area. I'm suprises by how much non ST shows are present. 09:18 PM August 05, 2008 from twitterrific

It's another beautiful sunset here in Paris. At 3:30 in the afternoon. 05:35 PM August 05, 2008 from twitterrific

We're not in Texas anymore, Toto. 05:22 PM August 05, 2008 from twitterrific

First time flying southwest in a long time, and now the last ever. My wife is 15 rows behind me. This sucks. 12:07 PM August 05, 2008 from twitterrific

Stopped for gas at centerpoint just in time to see the bats emerge from the sides of the highway. Go! Eat those bugs! 08:35 PM August 04, 2008 from twitterrific
