Jimmy Doohan - famous for "Scotty" in Star Trek (the original series) is making his last public appearance at a convention in Hollywood this weekend. I'm not surprised - since he's about 84 years old now. But I was surprised, and saddened, to hear that he's been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. To live such a life and then lose all memory of it just seems one of the greatest tragedies to me.

I got a non-contact infrared thermometer. Those of you who are Good Eats fans already know how cool this gadget is. This one is the MiniTemp from Raytek. Basically you point the laser at whatever you want and it'll read the temperature - perfect for testing to see if the cast iron skillet is too hot, just right or not hot enough.

I've already pointed it at the stove, a hot pan, a light bulb, a package of frozen fish, my arm, the floor, the cat's butt, a door, the inside of the dryer, the window...
