I'm a bit swamped right now, so no lengthy blog entries despite a half-a-zillion topics I want to write about. But here's a few random interesting things I've come across recently:

A personal memoir/account of a defection from East Germany in 1979.

South African women have been urged to check regularly at their local registry offices, to see whether they have been married without their knowledge. Criminals were using stolen identity papers to set up fake weddings to help foreign men get residence permits.

Asra Nomani has had enough of women having to enter mosques from the back door and pray in tiny balconies: She entered the local mosque through the front door and dared to pray alongside men, an act that has triggered heated discussions among America's Muslim community.
